New to the Dundas Studio Tour for 2010 is mosaic glass artist, John Highley, who will be showing at the Hillcrest Avenue studio of textile artist Lorraine Roy and photographer Janusz Wrobel, Studio Location 7 on the Dundas Studio Tour Map.

The theme of the 2010 Studio Tour is a “Celebration of Colour” and John Highley’s colourful glass mosaic mandalas which hang in windows or can be placed on stands and backlit on tables and window ledges provide a wonderful expression of colour’s magic.

John Highley originally trained ten years ago at Abbey Glass in the traditional copper foil glass technique making window panes and window boxes.  In the last two years, he has focussed solely on glass mosaics which provide him with greater opportunity for intricate designs and details that are not possible in traditional stained glass techniques.

Says Mr. Highley, “Much of my learning with mosaic techniques has come from networking with other artists from around the world online.  We all learn from each other’s mistakes and discoveries by sharing on our websites, blogs and tutorials.”

He continues, “Lately, I’ve been focusing on circular geometry and all that it provides in nature, architecture, and anywhere else I can find examples of it.   My glass mosaic mandalas each have their own unique energy; a method of transforming an inner personal state, to an outer reality that others can experience and make their own.”

For the Dundas Studio Tour, John Highley will be showing a selection of his glass mosaic mandalas which are filed with intense swirls of colour in tiny pieces of glass that reflect and dance beams of light.  They fit in perfectly with “A Celebration of Colour,” the theme of the 2010 Dundas Studio Tour.

The 2010 Dundas Studio Tour runs on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.  The Tour features seven different artist studios and twenty-four artists with a variety of food tasting, recipes, table-setting inspiration, pottery, weaving, textiles, jewellery, blown glass, and much more.  The Dundas Museum’s Doctor’s Office will again by a Dundas Studio Tour location, and doll artist Monika Shedden returns as a studio location.

Admission to the Dundas Studio Tour is free and each studio offers a draw for a special prize.    For more information about the Dundas Studio Tour, call 905-379-7353 or visit the website at www.DundasStudioTour.ca.
