Turning a New Leaf is the theme of the upcoming Dundas Studio Tour to be held on Saturday, October 1, and Sunday, October 2, and with two new studio locations and some thirteen new artists the annual tour is certainly turning a new leaf!
One of the new studio locations on the Tour this yearis that of artist Kristina Kirkwood. Kirkwood, herself turned a new leaf when she moved to Dundas from Burlington with her family some five years ago.
When describing her work, Kirkwood says that it has an anthropomorphic, three-dimensional feel to it and that she loves to work with mixed media and found objects.
Kirkwood says, “The vegetal texture of the natural world –the trees with their roots and seeds —are important to me; they make me feel grounded and a part of nature and so I so I like to use their richness in my work. I love the sculptural beauty of animal bone and have incorporated bone in many of my pieces, especially in my lamps and assemblage sculptures.”
For the Dundas Studio Tour Kirkwood will be showing a number of pieces, including large canvasses, and smaller, intimate shadow boxes, as well as a series of assemblage sculptures.
The 2011 Dundas Studio Tour runs on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The Tour features eight different
artist studios and thirty artists with a variety of table-setting inspiration, pottery, weaving, textiles, jewellery, blown glass, and much more. This year’s tour features two new studio locations and thirteen new artists; truly the tour has turned a new leaf!
