The 2014 ESSO Cup National Female Midget Championship Kick Off took place on Saturday, April 5th at Eastgate Square with 2014 Canadian Women’s Hockey Olympic Gold Medalist Laura Fortino.
The inaugural Esso Cup was held in Calgary, Alta., in 2009, giving female Midget teams from across the country the opportunity to compete for a national championship. The 2014 Esso Cup will mark the first time Canada’s National Female Midget Championship will take place in Ontario, and the Stoney Creek Girls Hockey Association and Ontario Women’s Hockey Association are proud to be hosting the prestigious event. A total of six teams will qualify from the 104 teams that started the journey to the Esso Cup. The Pacific Region will send two teams (BC and Alberta) and the West Champion (Saskatchewan and Manitoba) will compete against the Atlantic Region Champion and the Ontario Provincial and the Host Stoney Creek Sabres. The event will take place at the Gateway Ice Centre from April 20th to April 26th with the Gold Medal Game being televised live on TSN.
