On June 15th The Honourable Peter MacKay, Canada’s Minister of National Defence. visited Eastgate Square to participate in the Bicentennial of the Commemoration of the Declaration of the War of 1812.
The Commemoration of the Declaration of War commenced at 11 a.m. in Sears Court with an opening address by Minister MacKay. Local dignitaries were in attendance as well as 150 grade 7 students. Mike Fortune of Cable 14 and Source Cable was the MC, and re-enactors in period military uniform marched and played “God Save the King”.
Local historian Lawrence Michor talked about the British uniform and the significance of the battle at the Eastgate Square site. A time capsule was filled and dedicated. Among several significant items, it contained the winning postcards made by Grade 7 students who took part in the Bicentennial of the Declaration of the War of 1812 Postcard Contest.
