Celebrating the Bicentennial of the War of 1812

By June 4, 2012No Comments

On June 15th at 11 a.m. a special moment in Stoney Creek’s history will be captured through the celebration of the Bicentennial of the Declaration of the War of 1812.  To mark this historical event Eastgate Square is partnering with Battlefield House Museum to provide a variety of exciting activities that will take place throughout the day in Sears Court to commemorate the beginning of this war, two hundred years ago on June 18, 1812.

The Commemoration of the Declaration of War will take place in Sears Court at 11 a.m.

Mike Fortune of Cable 14 and Source Cable, dressed in period costume, will be the Official Town Crier.  Local dignitaries including Wayne Marston MP, Paul Miller MPP, and Councillor Brad Clark, will bring government greetings.  Re-enactors in period military uniform will march and play “God Save the King”.  At 11:40 a time capsule will be filled and dedicated.  It will contain the winning postcards made by Grade 7 students who took part in the Bicentennial of the Declaration of the War of 1812 Postcard Contest. The lucky winning student will receive a lap top computer and a $75 gift card to take Dad out for dinner at Eastgate Square.  The time capsule will be opened in 2062 – the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Stoney Creek!
